Frequently Asked Questions

Everything we get asked across walls, stonework, patios & paving, and concrete — grouped by service so you can jump to what you need.

Walls

How long does it take to build a wall in Redondo Beach?

Most residential walls are 1–3 weeks from breaking ground to cleanup. Engineering and permit can add 2–4 weeks before that.

Do I need a permit?

Walls over three feet typically need a permit and engineered drawings in Redondo Beach. We handle the permit and engineering coordination.

What's the difference between block, brick, and stone-veneered walls?

CMU block is the structural workhorse, often veneered with brick or stone. Brick is timeless and good value. Cut stone veneer is premium and unique. We’ll show you samples in your light.

Will the wall last?

Yes — properly engineered and drained masonry walls last 50+ years. The two failure modes are bad drainage and undersized footing, both of which we engineer around.

Are you licensed?

Yes — we’re a licensed California masonry contractor, fully insured and bonded. License number and insurance certificate on request.

Stonework

Is your stone real or manufactured?

Real natural stone. Manufactured (cast-concrete) veneer is cheaper but obvious up close and weathers oddly. We can install manufactured stone if budget requires, but we recommend real stone for visible work.

Can you match an existing stone wall?

Usually yes. We’ll source from the same quarry family or hand-pick stones that match the color, texture, and size. Bring us photos and we’ll tell you up-front.

What's the difference between dry-stack and mortared?

Dry-stack has no visible mortar — every stone is hand-fit to lock into its neighbors. Mortared walls have visible joints. Dry-stack is more time-consuming and more expensive but looks more authentic.

How long does a stone façade take?

A single-story façade is typically 2–4 weeks. A full home with chimneys and accents can be 6–10 weeks. Weather and stone delivery are the main variables.

Does stone need sealing?

Most natural stone in Southern California does fine without sealing. Porous stones (some limestones, sandstones) benefit from a breathable sealer in high-splash areas. We’ll advise per stone.

Patios & Paving

Pavers or stamped concrete?

Pavers cost more up-front but win on repairability — when one moves you reset it. Stamped concrete cracks like any slab and the only fix is patching or replacement. For a 20+ year surface, pavers.

Will weeds grow between the pavers?

Not if we use polymeric sand and the joints are properly swept and compacted. Polymeric sand hardens like a flexible grout and blocks both weeds and ants.

How long does a paver patio take?

A typical 300–500 sqft patio is 5–8 working days. Driveways and big pool decks can run 2–3 weeks.

Do you need a permit?

Patios at grade usually don’t. Raised patios over 30 inches, retaining walls integrated into the patio, and driveways near setback lines may need a permit. We’ll tell you up-front.

Can you tie into an existing patio?

Yes. We match paver size, color, and pattern, or use a contrasting border to bridge old and new cleanly.

Concrete

How thick should my driveway be?

Residential driveways are typically 4–6 inches of concrete over a compacted base. We use 6 inches with #4 rebar on a 24-inch grid for anything that’ll see truck or RV traffic.

Will it crack?

Concrete always shrinks as it cures, so the question is where the cracks go. We cut control joints at the right spacing and timing so cracks happen at the joints, where you don’t see them.

How long before I can use it?

Walk on it after 24–48 hours, drive on it after 7 days, full design strength at 28 days. We protect edges and keep traffic off for the first week.

Can you do decorative finishes?

Yes — broom, salt, exposed aggregate, stamped, integrally colored, and acid-stained. Stamped concrete can mimic flagstone, brick, slate, or wood plank.

Do you do tear-out and replacement?

Yes — we demo old concrete, haul it off, prep the sub-base, and re-pour. Often cheaper than years of patching cracks and stains.
