Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a masonry contractor charge?
Masonry is quoted by the square foot of finished work. Brickwork and stone come in around $10 to $45 a square foot, concrete flatwork around $6 to $15, and the typical South Bay residential job falls between $1,500 and $10,000. Demolition of what is already there, wall height, and how far material has to be carried from the street all shift the figure. We measure on site and hand you an itemized written price.
What is the difference between a mason and a general contractor?
Masonry is a trade; general contracting is a management role. We lay brick, set stone, pour and finish concrete, and run stucco, which are the parts of a build that depend on hand skill and cannot be rushed. A general contractor coordinates every trade on a larger project and would bring in a mason like us for this portion. For standalone hardscape and wall work, hiring the mason direct is both cheaper and faster.
How long does a masonry project take?
Small jobs are measured in days: two to five for a paver patio, three to seven for a garden or retaining wall, five or so for a driveway once the cure is counted. Outdoor kitchens take two to four weeks because gas, water and power have to be coordinated with the masonry. Add two to four weeks up front for anything that needs engineering or a permit, and we give you both dates in writing.
Do you need a permit for masonry work?
Some work does, much does not. Retaining walls above four feet, any wall supporting a driveway or structure, structural slabs, and outdoor kitchens with gas or electrical all need permits. So does anything in the public right of way, meaning the sidewalk, apron or curb. Patios, low garden walls and repairs in kind normally do not. We check with the city during the estimate so you know before you commit.
Do you charge for an estimate?
No. Estimates are free and they are done on site, because nobody can price a wall or a slab properly from a photo. We measure, look at the drainage and the access, and give you an itemized written price with no obligation.
